5 Party Games You Can DIY For Your Christmas Get Together
Century Square & Tampines 1
Say you’re planning on hosting a Christmas party at your home - you’ve got the Christmas music all ready, the guests have all RSVP’d, and the food’s all planned. But you haven’t got any party games for your guests. Don’t worry, though - we’ve got you covered! Here are 5 party game ideas that you can easily DIY at home.

As of now, gatherings are still limited to a maximum of five individuals, so do take note when organizing!

1) Santa Roller

A spin on the usual Secret Santa gift exchanges, your guests can instead play a game of skill to see what gifts they get. They roll a can down a table and try to get it to stop at a certain point. If they manage to successfully roll the can to a marking, they will win a gift.

Each person brings a present not exceeding an agreed-upon value to contribute to the gift exchange pool, and they can exchange their gifts with an agreeable party after the game is over.

Materials:

  • Coloured Tape - $1.20 each (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • Drink Cans - From $3.50 for a pack of 4 soft drinks (Cold Storage, Tampines 1 #B1-01/02)

How to play:

  • On a long table, measure out various distances and mark them with colour tape. Beside each distance marking, write down what gift the person wins if they manage to get the can inside the marking.
  • Each person takes turns rolling the can until they successfully get it to stop at one of the predetermined markers. Once someone is able to win a prize, they are no longer able to continue rolling the can.
  • The game continues until all of the gifts have been claimed.

If you’re stuck for gift ideas, we have some suggestions for you!

2) Pop That Balloon

Remember the game Pepsi-Cola when you were young? This fun iteration of it adds balloons into the mix - instead of merely trying to tag someone else, now you have to attempt to burst the balloons tied to their ankles.

Materials:

  • Balloons - $0.90 per pack of 10 pcs  (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • String - $0.70 per roll (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)

How to play:

  • Inflate the balloons, and secure them to each participant’s ankles with a string.
  • Roll a dice, or play rock-paper-scissors to determine who gets to go first.
  • Each participant is allowed to move only a set amount of times (eg. 2 times).
  • In order to score a victory, they must successfully pop another player’s balloon - the player they are targeting can dodge their attempts to do so, however they are only allowed to react when the attacking player makes a move towards them.
  • Players must only use their feet to pop the balloon. Using their hands results in disqualification, and they can be asked to perform a forfeit.

3) Cup Catchers

The perfect game for testing how dextrous you are, Cup Catchers pits two players against each other as they try to remove the paper separating the cups as fast and accurately as possible. The goal of the game is to remove all the paper as quickly as you can, causing the cups to fall inside one another and nest together, while not knocking any of them over.

Materials:

  • Paper Cups - $1 per pack of 20 pcs  (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • Paper - Repurpose and recycle paper that you have at home!

How to play:

  • Prepare the cup tower by stacking the cups on top of each other and slotting paper between each cup to prevent them from falling into each other.
  • Each player needs to pull out the slips of paper while making sure that the cup does not get knocked over.
  • The winner is the one who does it first with the most number of cups stacked successfully.

4) The Transporter

This game is a true test of coordination - what happens when you’re not able to see what you’re doing? Players are tasked with transferring styrofoam balls from a container placed in their lap to another balanced on their heads. It sounds easy enough, but when blindfolded and using a spoon, it adds a whole new level of difficulty and fun.

Materials:

  • Plastic Containers - $2.90  (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • Styrofoam Balls - $0.80 per pack (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • Spoons - $1.30 per pack (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)
  • Sleep Masks - $0.80 per pc (Mr DIY, Century Square #04-07/20/21)

How to play:

  • Each player is seated, and they balance two plastic containers - one in their laps, and another on their heads.
  • The plastic container in their laps is filled with styrofoam balls that they must then transfer to the container balanced on their head - however, they are blindfolded with sleep masks and must use a small spoon to do so.
  • The winner is the person who manages to move the most amount of balls to the container on their head in 60 seconds.

5) Guess the Drawing

A party classic, this Pictionary-inspired game can be played with nothing more than paper and pens. Set up a board to draw on, or use a large piece of paper that your guests can all see.

Supplies are easy to get, but if you want to get extra fancy, check out MUJI and DAISO for some quality stationery.

Materials:

  • Clipboards - $2 (DAISO, Tampines 1 #03-17/18)
  • Hexagonal Colour Markers (10pc set) - $10.90 (MUJI, Tampines 1 #03-06/07)

How to play:

  • Write a selection of words on cards or slips of paper and put them in a box to be drawn randomly later by the players.
  • Divide players into two teams. One person from each team gets chosen to be the artist for that round, the person who attempts to illustrate the word. Everyone else on the team will try to guess the word that is being drawn. Everyone gets a turn at being the artist.
  • Draw a word from the box. Let both team's artists see the word for about ten seconds. Don’t start the timer until both are ready to draw.
  • Have both team's artists draw at the same time. When both teams are ready, start the timer. The artists will have 60 seconds to draw while their teammates try to guess the word. The first team to guess the word correctly wins a point.
  • Repeat with each person getting a chance to draw, and the winners are the people whose team has the most points after everyone has had a chance to be the artist.

These games are all easily made with items you can get from Century Square & Tampines 1, and are sure to bring tons of fun and enjoyment to you and your guests. After you’re done shopping, why not stop for a bite to eat at these 8 places that are serving up festive meal sets, or get some takeaway for your Christmas gatherings?
