Every Timber Has Its History, Even a Log Cake
Have you started noticing bakeries displaying fantastical Yule log cakes across their shopfronts? How did this elaborate dessert become such an iconic centerpiece in every Christmas spread?
Well, originally an European custom, this story dates back to before the medieval period. To celebrate the end of Winter, people would feast and perform ceremonies to usher in a flourishing Spring season. This included the main activity of choosing a special piece of log, cutting and burning it. They believed burning the log brought good luck, purified the air and welcomed Spring.
Before burning, families would decorate the Yule log with holly, pinecones, ivy, and even wine and salt. The ashes were believed to be medicinal and could protect the family from evil and their wooden houses from lightning strikes. As homes grew smaller and fireplaces started to disappear around the 1600s, Yule log burning was replaced with cakes on the table, imitating the wooden log. Thus, the Yule log cake was born.
Also known as bûche de Noël, this elaborate pastry was popularized by the French in the 1900s. It is usually made of rolled sponge cake filled with buttercream and frosted with chocolate cream to look just like a log, and decorated with marzipan mushrooms, holly sprigs and more.
To usher in good health and happiness for the new year, make sure to get your fill of delicious Yule log! Here are some of the most delicious and creative cakes this season.
